Shaping petals for a giant paper flower

About

Paper.
Imaginary worlds.

My name is Anaïs Herd-Smith; I am a paper artist, set designer, and stop-motion director.

Inspired by nature and mythology, I create a totemic bestiary populated by hybrid creatures, giant flowers, and imaginary landscapes. Colorful, playful, and sometimes mysterious, these worlds invite you to take a closer look: scales transform into protective shells, petals unfurl, and the paper takes on color and becomes neon.

Layers, textures, and details give the paper its full presence, while subtle gradients created with an airbrush add depth to its surfaces. From personal sculptures to commissioned installations, as well as window displays and stop-motion films, I explore how a simple material can evoke a sense of wonder.

My practice spans handcrafted paper art, luxury commissions, sculptural installations and window displays, alongside a personal bestiary developed for exhibitions.
