Monstrus
Paper bestiary
Paper artist · Set designer
I am Anaïs Herd-Smith, a paper artist and set designer. Inspired by nature and mythology, I create handcrafted paper sculptures, giant flowers, hybrid creatures and imaginary landscapes.
Cutting, shaping and layering turn paper into scales, petals, protective shells and sculptural textures. Airbrushed gradients bring depth to these colourful surfaces. From a small creature to a giant botanical form, material and detail are at the heart of my practice.
My commissioned work brings paper art into sculptural settings and brand worlds, including projects for Hermès, Goyard and Guerlain. I work across bespoke paper sculpture, installations, window displays and set design, adapting scale and storytelling to each project.
Monstrus is a bestiary of handmade paper creatures, part of a wider invented mythology begun in 2019. Renardus, Poissinus and their companions have appeared in sculptures, installations and films. Selected exhibitions include Galerie Caractère in Neuchâtel, Le Moulin du Got and Galerie La Paimpolette.
